Background
SensorCell technology will transform the treatment of severe pressure injuries, burn victims and those at severe risk of skin breakdown by displacing the outmoded air fluidized therapy systems. LeviSense integrated bed systems offer comfort and soothing therapy in a design that exceeds the performance of the most advanced hospital systems and it is practical for home use. This versatile system features functions that make repositioning and transfers easier for the patient and the caregivers leading to more independence for the patient.
Pressure Injuries – Prevalent and Deadly
Pressure injuries – often referred to as bed sores, pressure ulcers, or decubitus ulcers – are far too prevalent, can be deadly and very costly to treat are currently top of mind, especially for hospital and healthcare facility administrators. For 2.5 million Americans, bed sores are a chronic, debilitating problem and every year 60,000 people die as a result of bed sores. Bed Sores cost the healthcare system $23 Billion per year. Because they are viewed as avoidable, much of this cost is borne by healthcare providers who also assume legal exposure. Bed sores, also know as pressure injuries (PI), are one of the most litigated injuries in the country, costing healthcare providers another $4.3 billion per year.
Bed sores are a life-long threat to the 300,000 Americans with spinal cord injuries (SCI), which leads to recurrent hospitalizations, multiple surgeries, devastating complications, and enormous costs. The VA, as the world’s largest healthcare provider for SCI, considers PI a dangerous threat to their veterans with SCI and result in an out of control cost of care.
Current solutions rely on pressure redistribution mattresses, which have changed little over the decades, so patients require frequent repositioning by the nursing staff that adds to hospital labor costs and results in unnecessary risks of additional injury to the patient as well as injury to the caregiver.
The LeviSense Solution
Patient Protection With Active Intelligence
LeviSense Medical has developed a bed system with instrumented, high-resolution sensing and control of surface pressure and shape. The system scans the patient’s form, position, and movements several times per second and adjusts the surface to protect the patient from excessive pressure that causes bed sores.
The patient position on the bed and pressure at each point is displayed at bedside, or remotely and can be recorded for proof of compliance with patient care standards. This approach dramatically reduces reliance on nursing staff to monitor and adjust patients. LeviSense technology is at the center of the mega trends in healthcare: telehealth, IOT and better clinical outcomes through patient data and technology.
LeviSense’s therapeutic bed capabilities are unique in the market. They rely on a patented sensing/control cell that is a fundamental advance on existing technology and has application beyond beds in institutional settings, opening an enormous addressable market.
Real-Time Monitoring for Custom Wound Therapy
Dr. Richard Viglione, LeviSense’s clinical advisor says, “Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process that requires a team effort by the patient, primary care physician and experts in the care and healing of wounds.” The LeviSense SensorCell Flotation Therapy System is the first and only system that delivers accurate timely information and the ability to adapt the surface to the unique needs of the patient so a wound care team can take effective action to a dynamic situation.
Ease of Use
No matter how great the clinical benefits are, if the bed requires a lot of training or does not match current facility practices and procedures, it will not be a success. The AI technology works, as we say, “under the covers” and we simplified the user interface to be easy for the least experienced, night-shift assistant. All the other typical bed features – head of bed adjustments, bed height, scale, Trendelenburg, etc. function just like any other hospital bed.
