History
Tim Moutafis – Engineer / Inventor
SensorCells, the technology at the core of a transformative therapeutic surface, were invented by Tim Moutafis and perfected with the aid of the University of Massachusetts – Lowell plastics engineering group.
Tim formed TheraTorr Medical, Inc. and created a full-sized functional therapeutic surface using over 500 independent SensorCells to support a patient’s body. The full-size prototype was used to perform extensive data collection and competitive comparative testing to validate the technology and the concept. Since each column can yield up to 6-inches, the body can sink into the surface like sinking into a deep pillow. Deeper immersion into the surface means that more of the patient’s body surface will bare the patient’s total weight, reducing the contact pressure on each and every body part. Comparing the surface immersion depth to therapeutic surfaces currently available, a Sensor Cell surface has twice the immersion depth, which allows more surface area to bear the total weight of the patient. The results of laboratory testing…a 40% reduction of dangerous tissue interface pressure over the best that the market has to offer!
The SensorCell is based on a simple mechanical device known as a rolling diaphragm. It is the basis of a totally new therapeutic bed concept that is disruptive and will transform the environment for seriously ill patients confined to a bed with burns or serious pressure ulcers.
Unfortunately Mr. Moutafis, beset with health issues, was unable to continue working full-time on his invention.
In 2018, LeviSense Medical acquired all the assets of TheraTorr Medical, including the SensorCell IP to continue this important work. Mr. Moutafis serves as an advisor to LeviSense.
